Etsy is the craft giant wildly popular with both artists and sellers. It’s well-known, so there’s a lot of competition, but it’s also likely to be the first place a customer looks for an eclectic item. It costs $0.20/month to list a product on Etsy for four months, or until it sells. Etsy gets a 3.5 percent cut on every sale, which isn’t much. However, it’s pretty labor-intensive; unlike Society6 and Redbubble, sellers have to provide and ship all the materials themselves. There’s a lot of work involved with an Esty shop, but some people are able to turn it into their full-time job.
I have been reading through some of the comments made about your article–and I have to say–dsr was hoping for a short cut. Preston, I believe that you may have written in another article”3-important keys to success”, that there are no short cuts. I remember there was a time that I had did just as you wrote about “diversification” and –Its funny–It does ring true. I have taught adult educations courses–Demonstrations for organizations–Entertainment venues–Murals–Portraits–and others–which provided me with stead income for me to return to school. I agree with your point Preston and qualify it in these terms: Artist must find a way to exercise their gifts by creating the opportunities to utilize them. Thanks for reminding me.
How much can you earn this way?  There are people earning thousands of dollars per month using the Dating Factory model.  They share the revenue with you, and provide good technical support and promotional materials.  All you have to do is build the site and let people know that it’s there.  And the built-in affiliate program capabilities allow you to recruit people to promote your site for you, and Dating Factory will see to it that they get paid.
While Etsy is fantastic for handmade goods that you’ve already created, if you’ve got killer designs that would look good on phone cases, t-shirts, or even wall hangings, pillows, and duvets, you can sell them on Society6 without paying anything to start. Society6 lets artists upload their designs and create their own shops where they choose what products their designs can be used on. That means one design can be used to make a whole range of awesome products that are printed and shipped on demand whenever someone buys from you. With top creators making thousands every month just from selling their designs.
The gist of this whole thing goes like this: UX designers, web designers, app developers and more are always looking for little icons to use in their work. Pull out your smartphone real quick and open up pretty much anything. If there’s an icon in the app that’s used to indicate a menu, option, button, or whatever, then somebody needed to design that icon. And sure, you can find icons all over the place to use, but since other designers are already using them, it gets pretty boring.Nobody wants to use the same thing as everybody else, so they look for alternatives — you know, like hand drawn icons. Plus, other drawings and illustrations can be turned into website assets, and even your handwriting can become a font. That means pretty much everything that you’re sketching onto that scrap piece of paper can be turned into something that can make you some extra money. And who doesn’t like making money for doing something they love?
Getting a user to signup for a dating offer is easy, but if that’s your only form of advertising and monetization you are still leaving a lot of money on the table. After all, what’s about everyone who is already dating or married? If you are already having experience with online dating offers, it shouldn’t be too hard for you to play around with some of your existing ad campaigns and test out dating and relationship on a CPS basis as well.
Currently, my site is not charging members. I am a software developer and designed, programmed my website from scratch. This enabled me to save money be coding the site myself. Right now I am focusing on getting members to join my site. My site is giving-away a free iPad mini this month, registration end is February 17, 2014 at 11:59:59 p.m. Eastern time. Research showed that it's better to end a giveaway on a Monday night.
Opening a new shop on a site like Creative Market is simple. Marc Johns is an artist. I’ve been following his work for over a year now. His drawings have been described as “badass whimsy”. They’re funny and deep, which is a unique combination. He articulates the things that people think, but don’t say. For example, one of his pieces is a giant starburst shape with the words “I don’t really know what I’m doing” written inside. Quirky and simple, but knowing.
But companies insist their monetisation approach isn’t quite a one-size-fits-all. The end goal here is to keep the customer engaged. Some companies such as TrulyMadly and The Inner Circle have tried out offline events with mediumto-little success. While they boost top lines, they don’t add much to the major revenue stream — in some cases under 20% of the year’s earnings.
A site from the FriendFinder Network that is constantly one of the top converting web sites. Maybe you have a site that isn't outright "adult" in nature, but it's more provocative than the traditional "vanilla" dating sites? Passion.com has all the high-converting designs and functionality of AdultFriendFinder, but with considerable restraint in the nudity and language departments. With over 23 million satisfied members worldwide, this program has created significant wealth for many affiliates.
My friend Kyle Adams has created a great course focused on helping designers and illustrators choose more effective colors for their projects. This skill is something that is very haphazardly executed by most people, but after hearing time after time that he has great color choices, this got him thinking about how he might best be able to help other people with the same skill.
The Etsy process is similar, just set up a shop and start thinking about how your library of daily drawings can become art prints. Hand-written quotes or favorite sayings tend to do really well. You can also capitalize on trends like this awesome Star Wars art (trend #1) that’s being sold as a coloring book for adults (trend #2). Take time to explore the marketplace and look at stuff you love, what’s trending, and market gaps your shop can fill.

Again, there are many variables here. An example would be, you can create a simple design, and the t-shirt will run you $19.95, then you set the percentage of your royalty rate. So if you choose a 20% royalty rate, your shirt will sell for $23.95, earning you a profit of $4.55 per shirt after the 24 cent transaction fee (which only applies when your royalty rate is set at 20% or above). Sell 50 shirts, earn about $227.
Next, you’ll need the right tools. You can be as complicated or simple as you want depending on your comfort with audio equipment, but at the minimum you’ll want a microphone and software for recording your voice. Companies like Behringer, Blue, Focusrite, and others sell studio-quality plug-and-play podcast setups that can get you recording today.

How do you make this happen? First, you have to vectorize your drawings, which sounds a lot harder than it actually is. You can do this in a variety of different ways, from using an app on your smartphone that converts a picture into a vector (Adobe Capture CC does this, for example), or scanning your work and then pulling that into a vector-based program such as Adobe Illustrator, and then tracing out your work. Point is, it may seem daunting to do, but it’s really super easy.

This is pretty informational , but I do have some questions. I recently turned 18 and am about to graduate high school, but I attend a technology center as well. I have been using Adobe products such as Photoshop quite a bit and as of right now I just need to study and get my certification for Adobe Photoshop. I have a real interest in making neat edits on photos. I plan to attend the technology center next year as well and get more experience. While attending school would it be possible for me to get my work out there to clients and maybe even businesses so that I could get paid? How would I go about doing this exactly? How much would I charge? If you would like, you can take a look at my Bechance Portfolio or e-mail me and I could send you some of my logos I have made and pictures I have edited.
Work toward creating your brand by hiring designers who share your style. The idea here is to develop a reputation for designs that are uniquely your company’s, that help to put businesses in the spotlight with logos, product designs and such. The goal is universal recognition. Your Brand portfolio is associated with you and can be attributed to you, even though your name is not on them. As your Brand rises in recognition so does your business.
Great Article Preston!! I am a graphic designer/videographer and one alternative revenue driver for me that “works in the background” is selling stock footage. Whenever I am on location for a shoot, I will venture out and capture assorted b-roll of architecture, city-scapes, fountains etc. I log and capture all that extra footage, tag it and sell it on assorted sites like Revostock and Pond 5. It’s always a nice surprise getting an email that I have sold a couple of clips generating a little bit of extra revenue. Look for my footage under fishidesign at those sites.
In a past life, I worked on sketching and really enjoyed it. With this book, I now have great hopes of returning back to my calling. I purchased this book as it appeared compelling that one could actually make a living doing something they enjoyed. Vincent has hit upon a very hot topic nowadays in which people are hungry to turn their passions, desires and interests into streams of sustainable supplemental income. So many people are fed up with their boring dead end jobs and desperately seeking a way out. I believe this book is a great catalyst in making an investment in yourself and your future.

These are great tips for established artists, but what I want to share here are some alternative artistic money-making ideas which might be more realistic options for someone just starting out down a creative career path. Some may seem obvious to you, and some you may already be doing, but I hope you can get at least one new idea for creating an extra source of income from your art.
You won't make a lot of money by running a free dating site, unless you have massive amounts of traffic. Now, we're not expecting you to achieve massive amounts of traffic. It's highly unrealistic that your site will be the next PlentyOfFish.com or Match.com. However, you will need at least a few thousand members (don't worry, it's not as hard as it sounds).
The first follows the startup path we outlined above: You have a disruptive idea for an app or piece of software, you validate the idea with real customers, and then raise money to hire developers or a development studio to build, launch, and scale your software. If you’ve done everything right, your software will be accepted to the Apple and Google Stores and you’ll make money every time someone downloads it or pays for a premium feature.
Anyway, I draw some logos, ilustrations, and icons onlyIn one of the biggest and trusted site (in my opinion) called 99designs.comActually there are other similar sites like 99designs, but I onlyFocus on this site since I have only 1-2 hours a day in my spare time. The other reason is there are hundreds of contestsavailable there I can choose every single day.
